Start your engines – Built for Speed is on at Ipswich Art Gallery every day these summer holidays until 19 February.
Created exclusively for the Children’s Gallery, ‘Built for Speed’ is an interactive environment where kids can design, build and race Lego supercars and hot rods on custom-made ramps and tracks. Kids can choose to race their cars down the giant ski-jump or speed ramp. Thrills, spills and awesome crashes are guaranteed!
The Children’s Gallery features tables full of Lego for children aged 4 and over to build racing cars of their own design. They can test drive and modify their cars for extra speed then re-race for ultimate victory!
Cr Charlie Pisasale, Chair of Arts, Community and Cultural Services said, “The ever-popular Paint Machines are also back featuring cool car-themed interactive games. There’s even a special area for the under 4s with soft ramps and Duplo so the whole family is welcome.“
If you’re after more, then check out the website under “kids” for the range of crafty car-themed holiday workshops on offer. In December, zoom in to make your own Racing Wreaths from real car parts and cool Cracking Cars Christmas crackers. In January, have fun constructing Crazy Cars with the ingenious ‘Makedo’ system then decorate scrumptious cookies in Edible Medals. Babies and toddlers can get into the action too, with Baby Speedway and Toddler Tracks sessions in the Children’s Gallery.
“The Children’s Gallery at the Ipswich Art Gallery was established in 1999 as Australia’s first permanent gallery space for children. In 2010 it won a prestigious Gallery and Museum Achievement Award for the quality of its children’s programs”, said Cr Pisasale.
With fun activities, accessible content and a family-friendly atmosphere, the Children’s Gallery is largely responsible for the Ipswich Art Gallery’s reputation as one of the most visited regional galleries in Australia with more than 90,000 visitors annually.
The Ipswich Art Gallery is free and open every day from 10am to 5pm with the exception of the Christmas shutdown from 24 December to 2 January inclusive. No bookings are required and visitors are welcome to drop in anytime and stay for as long as they like in air-conditioned comfort. If you’re heading out these holidays, make a date to meet trackside at the Ipswich Art Gallery for free summer holiday fun.
